Since I arrived at Ho Chi Minh Airport in Vietnam too late, I wanted to get to the hotel quickly. I checked the Grab app and found that I had to cross the street to the parking lot or plaza to get to the Grab zone to catch a Grab taxi, but it was inconvenient to take my suitcase with me, so I decided to just use the taxi waiting in front of the airport.
I remember taking a taxi waiting at the airport in Thailand in the past and they used a meter, so I thought that would be the case in Vietnam as well. However, I took a taxi, but there was no meter, and the driver left right away. About 5 minutes later, he said there would be a minimum charge when leaving the airport and asked for 350,000 dong (about 15 dollars). Actually, I checked and found that if I used Grab, I could go there by paying only 75,000 dong(about 3 dollars). The taxi driver asked for an amount five times higher. It was actually 2km from the airport to the hotel and took less than 10 minutes. I didn't want to fight, so I said I would understand. After arriving at the hotel, I told him it was too expensive and paid 300,000 dong.
I conclude this article with the hope that foreigners arriving at Ho Chi Minh Airport will not pay such exorbitant fees. If possible, go to a Grab zone and take a Grab taxi. If you happen to use a taxi waiting at the airport, it would be a good idea to ask how much it costs before boarding.
Airport taxis are the first locals that foreigners visiting a country meet, so they are bound to be the first impression of the country. In order for foreigners visiting Vietnam to have a good first impression of Vietnam, it would be better if these aspects were improved.
